If you can create pottery without causing a mess, consider yourself lucky. Even the most skilled potter can’t help but make mistakes when working with clay. And it’s not uncommon to get this mess and clay on your clothing.

When working with pottery, you should always wear some form of protective clothing, no matter what. In this article, I have compiled a list of the best pottery aprons available today.

While there are many different types of potters apron that you could choose from, not all aprons will suit your needs or preferences, so let these six aprons guard you against the mayhem of the studio.

What Should You Look For in a Pottery Apron?

When you’re looking to find the best apron for pottery, there are several things that you should consider before you purchase one.

When choosing your pottery apron, you should look for one that will protect your clothes from stains and spills as well as protect you from potential splashes when you’re working.

How to choose the best pottery aprons. potterspassion.com's methodology for reviewing pottery aprons

The Fit

A good apron for pottery making usually includes some way of altering the contour to provide a well-contoured fit. You don’t want anything that is excessively baggy and doesn’t provide adequate protection. This is often accomplished by the use of adjustable neck and shoulder straps. The more you can adjust it, the more comfortable you will be.

Overall Length

What matters is that the apron provides adequate coverage. Basic split-leg aprons may be excessively short, while more expensive models may be overly lengthy and heavy. Make sure you have enough coverage by checking the length.

Storage & Pockets

It’s a good idea to have a place to keep your tools and other necessities in your apron. There may only be one large kangaroo or two smaller pockets with the most basic aprons. In terms of variety, the more craft-oriented aprons offer dedicated large tool pockets.

Type Of Material

There are many types of materials available, each with its own advanƒtages and disadvantages. Some are made of linen or cotton, making them light and airy. Most of them are made of waxed canvas or denim. For a softer feel, you can also look for a microfiber blend.

Water Resistancy

Choosing the right material can have a huge impact on the level of protection. Clothing can be ruined by wet clay seeping through thin textiles. That is why waxed canvas is so popular. Pay special attention to whether or not a product is labeled as waterproof or water-resistant before purchasing.

Care and Maintenance

It’s a good idea to wait for the clay to dry before removing clay stains off clothing because clay is a malleable material when wet. However, unlike other stains, clay does not penetrate into your clothes’ fabric fibers, but it does adhere to the garment’s surface.

As a result, before putting the clothes in the washing, scrape off any dried particles of clay from the surface.

The best aprons are designed to protect your clothes from wet pottery; they will stain, but that’s the purpose! It doesn’t mean, though, that your apron needs to appear like a worn-out rag, especially when it’s just out of the wash.

All of our options are machine washable, and you may use stain removers if necessary to keep them looking their best.

Washing Tip

To avoid your apron strings becoming tangled in the laundry and dryer (especially if you’re washing more than one apron), carefully tie them together before putting them in the washer and dryer.

A Note on Sizing

In general, pottery aprons are one-size-fits-all garments; covering and comfort, rather than a specific fit, are the most important considerations when choosing one.

Furthermore, practically all aprons are equipped with adjustable straps and ties. Despite this, there aren’t many options for aprons that provide complete coverage for plus-size potters.
